Frequently Asked Questions

1. What does STOPS stand for?

STOPS stands for St. Tammany Outreach for the Prevention of Suicide. We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention through education, awareness, and compassionate community outreach across the Florida Parishes.

2. What does prevention, intervention, and postvention mean?

  • Prevention involves education and awareness that help stop suicide before it occurs—through training, community programs, and open conversations about mental health.
  • Intervention focuses on recognizing the warning signs, offering immediate support, and connecting individuals at risk with professional help.
  • Postvention provides ongoing care, compassion, and resources for those affected by suicide loss, helping survivors heal and reducing the risk of future tragedies.

3. What programs and trainings does STOPS offer?

STOPS provides evidence-based suicide prevention training such as:

  • safeTALK (Suicide Alertness for Everyone)
  • ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training)
We also offer Lunch & Learn programs for workplaces, schools, and community groups, along with educational presentations, awareness campaigns, and survivor support initiatives.

4. Who can participate in STOPS trainings or events?

Our programs are open to anyone—community members, students, teachers, parents, business owners, faith leaders, and professionals. Everyone can learn the skills to help save a life.

5. How can my organization host a Lunch & Learn or training session?

You can request a program directly through our website or email us at stops-la@gmail.com.
A $500 donation covers the cost of a Lunch & Learn, which helps fund prevention materials, training resources, and community outreach.

6. What should I do if I’m worried about someone who may be thinking about suicide?

Take any talk or sign of suicide seriously. Listen without judgment, show that you care, and encourage them to reach out for help. You can:

  • Contact local crisis resources or clergy
  • Connect them with a trained professional or STOPS for guidance

If there is immediate danger, call 911.
